Seasons and colours in the Dolomites

When is the best time for the Alpenglow in the Dolomites?
Think of the Dolomites for a moment... Do you also picture the rocks glowing red in the evening sun? Or rather endless white ski slopes? Grey jagged cliffs? Whether you visualise the “most beautiful mountains in the world” in winter or summer, from hiking, skiing, as a nature photographer or simply via the webcams in the Dolomites and Carezza, colours probably play an important role. But our UNESCO World Natural Heritage site has much more to offer than the “Enrosadira”.
Spring - Delicate colours and nature awakening
There is often snow in the mountains well into April. All the greater the sense of relief for people and nature when winter finally gives way to sunshine and warmth. The air is still very fresh and clear, and the morning mist soon lifts. The last patches of snow retreat and crocuses begin to burst forth - the unmistakable messengers of spring. On the larches the new, light-green needles appear. In the mixed forests they stand out clearly among the evergreen conifers. The first hikers are already out and about as well. Anyone who loves nature can hardly wait to set off again after the winter. The cheerful, light and hopeful atmosphere immediately spreads to everyone moving through the awakening landscape.

Summer - Bright contrasts and rich tones
Summer in the mountains is lush and vibrant without ever feeling oppressive or hot. That is one reason why so many guests seek refuge in the mountains during the warmer months. Another reason is the natural beauty of the landscape in full bloom. The alpine pastures glow in deep green, dotted with colourful flowers, from blue gentian and pink alpine roses to yellow marsh marigolds and many more. But the inanimate nature also shines in many colours, from shimmering layers of rock to turquoise mountain lakes and the ever-changing play of clouds and weather. Anyone travelling on foot or by bicycle at this time immediately feels the energy of the mountains and nature. It is the perfect moment to recharge your batteries.

Autumn - Golden expanses and warm tones
Now begins perhaps the most photogenic time of the year. In September and October the sun sits that little bit lower, which makes the light particularly soft and warm. On the alpine pastures the second hay harvest is brought in (we call it “Gruamat”) and the air is already slightly cooler. In return, the forests now glow all the more intensely, as the larches turn yellow, orange and finally almost red. In the evening hours the colours become especially vivid. Autumn is the time to soak up sunshine and warmth once more before winter. As the year moves towards it finale, nature settles down to rest, and we too like to retreat indoors again. We therefore recommend enjoying the view of the autumn forests and the Alpenglow in the Dolomites from our sky pool as well: In the 34 °C warm water, the day draws to a calm and relaxing close.

Winter: Blue-and-white contrasts and crystal-clear air
Winter is the season of minimalist colours. Only now do you notice how many different shades and textures are found in the white of the snow, the grey of the rocks and the blue of the sky. The snow acts as a natural reflector and intensifies the sun’s rays on the relatively short days. The webcams of Carezza in the Dolomites offer a small preview. A striking contrast, however, is created by the warm evening glow on the icy peaks that spreads as soon as the pistes empty. The Moseralm Dolomiti Hideaway, located right beside the pistes of Carezza, is strategically positioned for exploring the white expanses, catching every ray of sunshine, breathing in the crystal-clear winter air and then relaxing in the wellness area with views of the mountains.

All year round: The Alpenglow in the Dolomites
We Ladins call the Alpenglow “Enrosadira”, the change to pink. Shortly before sunrise and shortly after sunset, because of its angle the sunlight must travel a longer path through the atmosphere. During this process the short-wavelength blue light is scattered more strongly. What remains is mainly long-wavelength, reddish light. On the pale grey or snow-covered rocks of the Dolomites this light can be reflected particularly well, bathing the mountains in an intense orange-red glow. The Alpenglow in the Dolomites is most beautiful when the sky in the west is clear, with at most a few high, thin clouds that also reflect the light. The clean, dry air and the long evening sunshine in autumn have earned this season the reputation of being the best for observing the Enrosadira.
