Can't sleep on holiday?

Can't sleep on holiday?

Tips for a restful sleep away from home

A holiday is the most relaxing time of the year. At last, you can enjoy a proper lie-in and completely switch off. Although it may sound straightforward, many people - particularly at the beginning of their stay - find it surprisingly difficult when they simply cannot fall asleep. Instead of enjoying a peaceful night’s rest, they can’t sleep on holiday and end up counting sheep until the breakfast buffet opens. But why does that happen? And what can you do about it?
Why do so many people struggle to sleep on holiday?
On the first night in a hotel, we find ourselves in unfamiliar surroundings. The size of the room, the lighting, the furniture and even the faintest background noises are different from home, so we notice them more consciously. Even the bed - the pillows, mattress and duvet - feels slightly different.
Many people arrive exhausted after a long journey while also feeling excited and overstimulated on the first evening. Popular holiday activities, such as outings that continue late into the evening or a rich dinner late in the day, can also delay winding down and falling asleep.
And there is another factor that should not be underestimated: many of us create stress unconsciously simply by thinking that we ought to sleep perfectly because we are on holiday, and we should make the most of the opportunity to relax.

What can help?
If you often can’t sleep on holiday, a few simple tricks can make things easier. Try to maintain your usual evening rituals or bedtime routine as closely as possible. Have dinner at roughly the same time as you would at home and prepare for bed in familiar ways, such as reading, breathing exercises, listening to relaxing music or some screen-free time.
Create sleep-friendly conditions in your room, such as the right temperature and lighting. Familiar items from home, such as a sleep mask, your own pillow or a calming room spray, can provide reassurance and create a sense of familiarity.
And during the day? Surround yourself with fresh air and natural daylight. Moderate exercise, such as hiking, cycling or swimming, creates a healthy tiredness that encourages better sleep.
And if it still does not work straight away, stay relaxed. A few hours less sleep will not ruin your holiday - and often, simply realising that is enough to help you sleep better and truly recover on holiday.

How to keep it going once you are back home
Have you managed to sleep wonderfully during your holiday and returned home feeling refreshed? Congratulations! To help the benefits last as long as possible, we have a few more suggestions.
Try to identify what helped you feel so good during your stay - was it less stress, more exercise, reduced screen time or a different evening routine? Perhaps there are one or two things you can continue at home - even small changes can make a noticeable difference.
Try not to use your bed or bedroom for other activities such as watching television, eating or working. This helps your body associate going to bed with sleeping. And here too, the same applies: greater calmness and less perfectionism help you unwind and gradually improve your rest and recovery.
Would you like to truly relax and recover on holiday? At the Moseralm Dolomiti Hideaway, you will find exactly the right atmosphere. Choose one of our rooms or suites in South Tyrol, enjoy varied and memorable days, and fall into bed happily tired each evening. You will soon discover just how beneficial a break from everyday life can be.
